Which Time Zones Let Digital Nomads Keep US Business Hours?

Published September 5, 2026 by SyncHours Team

"Stay within a few hours of home" is common nomad advice, but "a few hours" hides a lot of variation depending on which US coast your team sits on and exactly where a city's offset falls. Below are eight popular nomad bases, ranked by actual working-hours overlap (9am–6pm on both ends) against both a New York-anchored (EST) and a San Francisco-anchored (PST) team.

Ranked by overlap

CityUTC offsetEST (NYC) overlapPST (SF) overlap
Medellín, ColombiaUTC-59h6h
Mexico City, MexicoUTC-68h7h
Buenos Aires, ArgentinaUTC-37h4h
Lisbon, PortugalUTC+04h1h
Cape Town, South AfricaUTC+22h0h
Bali, IndonesiaUTC+80h1h
Tbilisi, GeorgiaUTC+40h0h
Chiang Mai, ThailandUTC+70h0h

Offsets are standard-time, fixed-offset assumptions for cities that don't observe DST (all eight here qualify), against a fixed 9am–6pm US working day. Actual EST/PST offsets shift by an hour during US Daylight Saving Time — see the 2026 transition calendar for exact dates.

The pattern worth remembering

Latin America dominates this list for a structural reason, not a cultural one: most of it sits within 0–5 hours of US East Coast time, and several countries — Colombia and Mexico among them — no longer observe Daylight Saving Time at all, which makes their gap to a US team more stable year-round, not just narrower on average. Southeast Asia and East Africa/Caucasus cities cluster at the bottom for the same structural reason in reverse: they sit close to 12 hours from the US East Coast, which is close enough to antipodal that no shift in start time recovers meaningful overlap.

Notice, too, that the coast your team is on changes the ranking, not just the numbers — Mexico City actually beats Medellín for a West Coast team despite trailing it for an East Coast one, because Mexico City's UTC-6 sits closer to PST's UTC-8 than Medellín's UTC-5 does. If your team spans both coasts, or you don't yet know which coast you'll be reporting to most, it's worth checking the specific pairing rather than assuming a Latin America base is automatically the safe choice.

This ranking assumes a 9-to-5 team — most aren't exactly that

The table above holds a fixed 9am–6pm working day constant on the US side so the cities can be compared on equal footing, but real teams skew earlier or later, and that shift changes the ranking more than it changes any single number. A team that runs 7am–3pm ET — common for teams with heavy West Coast or Europe-facing collaboration — gains real overlap with Lisbon and even Cape Town that the standard 9–6 baseline understates, while a team running later, 11am–7pm ET, loses some of its Buenos Aires overlap and gains a little against Bali instead. If your team's hours are meaningfully off the standard shape, treat this table as a starting ranking to re-verify, not a final answer — the actual number for your specific hours takes thirty seconds to check on the SyncHours planner and is worth doing before a move, not after.

Using this before you book anything

A ranking like this is a starting point, not a substitute for checking your own team's actual hours — a team that runs 7am–3pm instead of 9–6 will get a meaningfully different overlap picture, especially at the borderline cities in the middle of this table. Drag your team's real start and end times against any of these cities on the SyncHours planner before you commit to a base, and if you're mapping out a multi-stop route rather than a single base, see the digital nomad timezone math for how overlap holds up (or doesn't) as you move between stops.
